Re: [RC] I survived Camille in 1969 - Chris Paus

thank you so much for putting this all in perspective. I appreciate it.

There was a time in my life when I was homeless and didn't know where I was going to sleep or what I was going to eat. I once walked from the space needle in Seattle all the way to Mercer island (across a floating bridge) to get dinner that was offered to me. I grew up in an upper middle class home with plenty of material things. I had a good education, and it still happened. yes, some of it was poor lifestyle choices, and some of it just plain sh!t luck. Whether the people of NO and southern Miss were rich or poor, whether they chose to stay behind or simply had no choice, is not germane anymore.

somehow I managed to climb out of that situation and now have a decent roof over my head, 14 acres of prairie pasture, and 8 lovely Arabian horses and a husband and grown sons and grandchildren. I feel so blessed. But, I know that all this material stuff is NOT security. It could all be gone tomorrow, just like it's gone for the hurricane victims.

Yes, people need to pull themselves up by the bootstraps, but you gotta at least have boots to do that!

Sure some people who stayed in the hurricane zone could have evacuated. I'm sure there were those who thought it wasn't going to be so bad. some probably stayed to take care of pets. Some were stuck in hospitals and nursing homes and other institutions. Do we blame someone in a hospital bed for not evacuating? How about the nurses and doctors who stayed behind to take care of them. do we blame them also?

I agree with the others. We need to quit arguing about whose fault it was and help wherever we can. It might be our community next time, flood, earthquake, fire, tornado, blizzard...

Yes, it is unfortunate what has happened to hundreds of thousands of people.  Having survived a Level 5 Hurricane IN A VAN one block north of where the tidal wave stopped, I would like to give you good folks some insight from the perspective of a Mississippi girl that grew up on the Gulf Coast.
