RE: [RC] [RC] Agreement for spooky horse behavior - Ranelle RubinI totally agree with Diane! I rode a horse that was sitting around as a pasture ornament because the owner was tired of him spooking sideways at every little thing. I am 5'2" and this guy was about 15'3", so my short legs had a hard time connecting with his sides. I put on English Prince of Wales spurs turned upside down to make them as gentle as possible. Every time he spooked at stuff just on the trail, he felt the nudge of those spurs. It took about 2 weeks. He also learned how to carry himself engaged from behind with the use of draw reins and those spurs nudging him into the bit (mostly because I had a hard time physically connecting with his sides) for a few weeks. His owner had used an incredibly cruel "tie down" because he did not know what to do with his head. By the time I took that horse to his first ride, he was balanced, his neck was relaxed and we had a great ride! This same horse finished 22nd on Tevis 2003, and now lives a life of luxury in Japan owned by Seichi Hasumi! Lessons, no matter what the issue can be learned and a happy, controlled horse can be created almost without fail.
