Re: [RC] Dogs, horses, and snakes/elec collar? - Rosalie Marley

There was a really good article in The Horse magazine, Feb 2005 that I
read on line. Apparently I need to be a subscriber to read it again.
It's article 5408 and it covers the use of shock collars in training
horses. If I remember the collar isn't exactly like the canine
version because of the difference in how dogs and horses tolerate
pain.

I just lost my yearling colt (15 months old) to a rattlesnake and
have been doing a lot of thinking on teaching snake avoidance like the
dog people do. The colt was in his pasture, it's not like we were on
the trail or that I was even with him when he got bit. I'm worried
for the rest of my horses, we live in "prarie rattlesnake" country.

Too bad our dogs and horses can't all get just enough of a bite in the nose
to be a painful but harmless lesson. We "snakeproof" our dogs with the elec.
collar (it's one of the few times I ever use the "high" settings.)It's not
always effective;I've heard some dogs decide thereafter to pre-emptively
attack and kill every snake they encounter. The collar deal ought to work
with horses;the settings would need to be very low for a horse.(You catch a
non-poisonous snake, put it in a pillow case, and put it in the refridgerator
for at least two hours to make it torpid enough to control during the
lesson.)Chico don' like snakes;some deer apparently hate 'em,judging from
the deer-stomped snakes I've seen.Maybe they did get a punch(non-venemous or
"dry" venemous) in the nose while grazing, and thus learned.
