Re: [RC] [RC] We Lost New Orleans - Soli SorokinI have just caught up on the coverage, and almost all the "looters" they've shown are people trying to get the necessities - diapers, food, etc. The media love to play up things like this, because it's what those sitting comfortable in their homes worry about. It's one thing if a natural disaster gets your stuff, it's quite another when a looter does. That most of these "looter" people are low income, and were unable to evacuate is another factor. Just remember that what you see on CNN is not ever going to be the full picture - and you won't GET the full picture unless you take your tail down there to see for yourself. There's always bad apples, I don't argue that - and a lot of them....but it's important to realize that unless you've been directly affected by such serious disasters, it's almost impossible to tell what you'd do. And virtuallly none of us have been affected by something along the scales of what has happened now. Even Florida's hurricanes pale in comparison. Morals are, as I think Mark Twain noted, directly tied to how empty one's stomach gets. With no stores open for business, and no electricity, at least some of that food and supplies can be used instead of becoming spoiled, flooded, and otherwise ruined. I'm thinking of going down there to volunteer with an animal rescue group once things with the levees are stabilized. I think as the water lowers, many areas will be difficult to get through via vehicles, and I'm wondering if a good crew on horseback would be helpful. ~S On 8/30/05, Joe Long <jlong@xxxxxxxx> wrote: On Wed, 31 Aug 2005 01:14:24 GMT, Ridecamp Guest <guest-owner@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
