Re: [RC] cougars and protection to carry - Sky RanchI will attest to the fact that a mama cow protecting her calf is probably much more dangerous than a mountain lion any day. Lions are going to avoid you - they'll see you long before you ever see them, and leave the area. Mama cows won't - they'll come after you - and fast! - if they think their baby is in danger. My own private fear is for mama bears, though -- that's why I always ride with my dogs. My dogs (Siberian Huskies) go ahead of me on the trail, and I figure they'll scout out any bears ahead of me. Hopefully, they won't turn the bear back on me - but if they do, you're going to hear a LOT of yelling! As far as shooting a gun while mounted, you'd better train, train, train ahead of time. Another consideration - a gun is heavy - a 38 or 44 adds a lot of weight! :-) (a good conditioning tool as far as weight?) Anything lighter isn't going to do the job... We didn't hold up a jacket, but we raised our arms above our heads to make ourselves taller than a seal when it was "rearing", as the males do. I also used this technique when threatened by a cow with a newborn calf. I raised my hands above my head, jumped up and down and yelled as loud as possible. the cow turned her attention again to her calf and I got out of there ASAP! If you come upon one, use this fabric to "increase your size" by holding it at either end and raise your arms above your head.=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
