RE: [RC] The book - Nancy SturmThanks. As a former distance runner, then competitive cyclist, I have been wondering if I am making a mistake in applying training techniques that work with human athletes to the physical conditioning of a horse. Am I understanding correctly that the same training strategies are appropriate for the two different species? Nancy Sturm> The Ultimate Ride, by Chris Carmichael. One of the interesting topics pursued in the book is that of "periodization". Minicycles, macrocycles, megacycles--how to build a week, a month, or a year's worth of ebb and flow work/recovery cycles that will enable very long term continual improvement. the last time I was in Abu Dhabi, writing the 5 year plan, I took a marathoner friend familiar with periodization techniques for marathoners and that concept was built into the plan. At the time, it was a relatively new concept to me. That marathoner, Rob Lyden, has since written his own book and his in-depth treatment of periodization is excellent. Google Rob Lyden and/or periodization and you'll likely find it. ti =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
