Today we have many who have ridden very little, or

FWIW, I'm an endurance "newbie" that does not fit that
demographic. I've ridden and trained horses for over
20 years.

The thing that prevented me from getting into
endurance sooner was actually that I rode NATRC rides
in the late 1980s. The rumors about endurance at that
time were quite ugly. I was told repeatedly by anyone
involved in NATRC that endurance riders were
cut-throat maniacs who ran their horses to death. It
took me a lot of years (and reading ridecamp for a
couple <g>) to decide that I needed to just get out
and find out for myself.

As for 100s, as I noted earlier, I'm pretty sure I
have horses here that can go that far. But, "pretty
sure" makes it scary to try it the first time.
Especially as I'm a conditioning minimalist.... Plus,
it's a really long time to be on a horse; especially
us mid-to-end of the pack riders who would be in the
dark a long time. There's a big mental leap to make
to go from 50 to 100. I only tackled the 25 to 50
leap in January 2004. Although I did instantly become
of those that can't see myself going back to LD
(without a compelling reason) and started my secondary
endurance horse straight in 50s.
