Re: [RC] Ford trucks - engine details - 2003 - Barbara McCrary
Lud and I were nearly killed once when the
computer on our cruise control (Toyota Camry) went amok. The car speeded up and
no amount of braking or shutting off the cruise switch worked. I threw the
automatic transmission into neutral and when Lud threw it back into drive, it
kicked out. We never used the cruise again. The Toyota dealer said they had
never heard of the problem, but about two years later there was a recall; some
cars were discovered in Canada with the same problem. The computer was replaced
free, but we never trusted it again. We were driving on CA I-80 toward San
Francisco at about 9 PM with wall-to-wall cars at 65-70 mph on an 8-lane divided
freeway. Thank goodness Lud was driving and not I. He was so cool-acting.
I suspect he was as afraid as I, but he succeeded in not showing
it.

"...Jeeze, fine - sure blame it on the software guys..."
One of my sources, a Ford diesel votech
instructor, says that they were also having problems with the fuel pressure
transducer. It was responding to pulsations in the fuel line. The
fix was partly software, and eventually they moved the sensor to a new
place.
All vehicle makers issue various levels of recall
when problems are found. Even if your vehicle is running fine, it
doesn't hurt to have the service manager run the VIN through the computer
system periodically and find out if there are any bulletins on your
vehicle. Some of them are things that will be better if fixed, but are
not told to owners unless a problem surfaces.
