RE: [RC] boots/weight and gaits - Linda CowlesAdding weight to any hoof retards the timing of that hoof in relationship to the others, increases lift, and increases length of stride. REMOVING weight at the other end of the horse does the reverse. To say nothing of the fact that removing that weight by removing the shoe speeds timing of the breakover. Thus the stepping pace horse can be made smoother by going barefoot in the rear, which is good for the horse anyway,as opposes to adding weight at the front, which is bad for 'em unless done very moderately. This is why I like using the Epics so much; they are so light that they are - almost - as good as barefoot. I've been conditioning Gab barefoot behind and in Epics on the front because it's how I plan to compete -- IF I ever get out there! <Heh! Heh!> The Epics are very light, so it's a totally different feeling from riding with shoes. We float. My conditioning buddies and I use to call riding "pounding down the trails". But it isn't "pounding", riding barefoot or in boots. You float. It feels like flying.
