[RC] Retrofitting Epics (or "Fun with EZ Boots") - Lucy Chaplin TrumbullWell, after trying to add a gaiter to a new EZ boot last night, I already see why my farrier advised me to buy some longer screws ahead of time. <g> I like the part where it says in the instructions "Use the screw as a lever to pull the gaiter around". Yeah, right. I managed to screw one in and that was it. Mucho fumbling and cursing ensued until I gave up attaching more than one screw. My new gaiter came with four golden nuts in a small packet and the instructions insist that I must use those instead of the ones already in the boot. I removed one of the original ones from the boot and it appears to be exactly the same as the four that came with the gaiter. Is there some special secret reason I *have* to use the new ones (thus taking all the strap-stuff etc apart)? Why do they give you those golden nuts, but not longer screws? Another question - will an old-style EZ boot strap fit on a new-style EZ boot? I lost an EZ boot half-way down California Loop at the weekend, but was lucky enough to notice, go back, and find it sitting in the middle of the trail. It turned out the back strap had broken and was flapping out the back of the boot. I was glad that it didn't just get yanked off my horse's foot for no reason, but not so good in terms of keeping it on. <grr> (not sure I like the spiffy new design of the strap). I'm going to call EZ Care for a replacement strap tomorrow, but in the meantime until it arrives I wondered about dismantling one of my old, size 1 boots to put onto the new-style size 0 boot? And lastly, has anyone else had problems with the cable slipping sideways where it loops around that white nylon washer-thing at the side and sort of smooshing down and mangling the boot? I've had this happen on two boots now. Perhaps I just need to make sure the screws are tight? * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Lucy Chaplin Trumbull elsietee AT foothill DOT net Repotted english person in the Sierra foothills, California * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
