The pace is broken. What is causing a gait change is the weight of the boots. In the TWH show world - and I suspect in the saddlebred also weight is added to either the front feet or back feet to change the gait of the horse. Today's "big lick" show walker is breed to be very pacy and then 5 pound pads and shoes are added to the front feet to square the gait out of a pace. Added weight on the hind feet is probably what is causing the transition to a lateral gait. You can find out by removing the boots from the hind feet and seeing what type of gait you end up with. The question you really need to ask is "is this gait modification brought on by added weight in the best long term interest of your horse." Truman Just curious if any other people may have noted a gait difference with their horses while wearing any kind of hoof boot and what they thought or did about it, if any thing.
