What is a "controlled" start for an Endurance Ride. In the CTR group I
belong to (MOTDRA) we start out separately 30 to 60 minutes apart out
time is tracked from when we go out. Shannon

I suspect you mean seconds...  ;-)

But to answer your question, a controlled start is one where there is a
pace horse or a pace vehicle, and the riders may not pass this horse or
vehicle until it turns off and lets them by.  It usually goes out at a
pace equivalent to a rather average working trot, and it may continue for
as little as a hundred yards or so to get riders past specific footing or
obstacles, or it may go on for a mile or two.
