Re: [RC] FEI WELFARE SUB-COMMITTEE INAUGURAL MEETING IN BADMINTON (GBR) - heidiNot wanting to throw cold water and I'm not a cynic but a realist. Ever notice how a bureaucracy forms an internal committee when it comes under scrutiny for its acitivites? I find it interesting that you did not come up with this point of view when you were supportive of AERC forming a horse welfare committee. Apparently this is a good move for an organization that you support, but not a good move for one that you don't. Every person on the committee sits in conflict of interest since they are directly affiliated with the FEI in an official capacity. Again, if this is true, then every member of the AERC HWC sits in a conflict of interest. People on the AERC HWC have roles in the sport--as riders, officials, etc. To suggest that one can be a caring individual without conflict if one sits on the AERC committee even though one is involved in the sport but that one cannot do the same thing sitting on the FEI committee is a real stretch. So far this is a good PR stunt, but I doubt if little will come from it. Truman, awhile back you were accusing people of "spin" regarding the FEI drug test. I still don't know what sort of "spin" there is to the blunt facts that were presented. The OC broke the rules in the first place, and then FEI screwed up by not getting notification to the first across the finish line when the second test was being conducted. But your post is a great example of "negative spin." You are casting aspersions on a positive effort. Ed was absolutely right in his post. Additionally, FEI is trying to do the right thing here in the face of a big screw-up--but even if they do a stellar job of it, I'm sure there are those who will find some way to make it look bad. And that is really a shame. Everybody should go back and read Tom Noll's post about the Owyhee 100. We are all endurance riders here, and those in the FEI and those in the AERC have a lot more in common than they have differences. There are bad apples in FEI--the WEC in the UAE brought some of them to the surface. There are also bad apples in AERC--we have had our share of bad situations and resulting conflicts over the years. The majority of participants, officials, and other players in both FEI and AERC are concerned about taking care of horses. In neither case is the presence or the actions of some less-than-stellar players a condemnation of the entire organization, or of the good individuals that participate in either organization--many participate in both. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain by being supportive of those caring individuals who are trying to take steps to make things better.
