RE: [RC] More Daylight to ride! - Alison FarrinWell, my core body temperature is warmer in the morning, so we rarely turn on the heat in the AM. For lighting, if I get home from work at 5 PM and its dark, I go in the house and turn on lights. If I go home at 5 PM and its light until 8, I don't even go in the house until it gets dark. Since we get up between 7 and 8 am, its always light when we get up. So, I save 3 hours of lighting on DST, and turning on the heat if I'm freezing in the evening. If I am home early enough to do laundry in the daylight, I will hang out sheets and towels rather than putting them in the dryer. More savings. The more its light outside, the more we cook outside - I'm not sure about the relationship of using propane vs the microwave - don't know if we save or not. In addition, I leave the outside lights on until my husband comes home - they come on at dusk and go off at midnight. During DST, that's 8-12, during the rest of the year its 5-12. All that said, having daylight in the evening to ride in sounds good to me! It puts off my annual bout of no daylight depression from early November to December! Alison A. I have to admit, I have been doing the same mental arithmetic as Heidi. I do live in the country and work at home, so maybe that's the error in my equation. I actually love daylight savings time, but we just turn on the lights in the morning instead of the evening and maybe even try to heat a colder house in the morning than in the evening. We're still supporting several small Middle Eastern countries with gas for our trips to town and the clothes dryer and hot water heater are being used at the same level. I never could figure out what we were saving. I lived in the big city and worked for a Fortune 500 company for 34 years. The savings in energy come from using electric lights for one less hour at night. If you must leave work at the same clock time, irrespective of the position of the sun, you get one more hour with no artificial lights etc. If you have an automatic set back thermostat, it is warmer outside for one hour when the temperature has been increased for your evening comfort. The fallacy to that is that in many cases (certainly here, when I have to go to work in town on "clock time"), it means turning on the lights for an hour in the morning, and turning up the thermostat an hour earlier then. Still seems to me that it all comes out in the wash. Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
