With each shape of ring, the bit plays differently on the horse's mouth.  You really have to try till you find the one that works.  And, just to muddy the waters, what may work today may not work 6 months from now.
 
Any bit can be severe in the wrong hands.  I switch between my loose ring and eggbutt.  The hunter D-bit is what you see race horses wearing...although not necessarily a Waterford bit.
