re:[RC] kids and endurance/LD - heidiAnne: I heard a great seminar in January by a Calgary pediatrician regarding kids riding horses, including long distance riding. One of the remarks that really stood out was that pre-pubescent kids don't sweat properly and will dehydrate much more quickly than adults. We all know that poor hydration can lead to metabolic issues, including fatigue and reduced brain function. The doc recommended taking lots of goodies along, including salty snacks and fruit juices to ensure the kids are getting the energy and electrolytes their bodies need, and to be prepared to stop along the trail, eat and rest when the kids start to get grumpy. I would agree with all of this except the electrolytes. Coming from an entire family with low salt tolerance, if this advice was followed across the board, some kids could really have their future issues with hypertension exacerbated. We tend to consume far too much salt as it is--far better to keep them eating FOOD and keeping their hydration levels up by having sufficient protein to maintain osmotic pressure in the bloodstream, and sufficient fluids.
