Anne: I heard a great seminar in January by
a Calgary pediatrician regarding kids riding horses, including long
distance riding. One of the remarks that really stood out was that pre-pubescent
kids don't sweat properly and will dehydrate much more quickly than adults. We
all know that poor hydration can lead to metabolic issues, including fatigue and
reduced brain function. The doc recommended taking lots of goodies along,
including salty snacks and fruit juices to ensure the kids
are getting the energy and electrolytes their bodies need, and to be
prepared to stop along the trail, eat and rest when the kids start to get
grumpy. He noted that many kids wait too long to complain, so advised
that adult supervisors consider a few planned stops along the way to make sure
everybody is well fed, watered and rested.
