Re: [RC] Jack Russels now: puppy selection LONG - Sisu West RanchI would have been interested to look at the pedigree of that dog. It is possible that someone was lying. I have heard of people selling accidental matings where the actual sire was the larger dog breed that they also raised. Another possibility is that this was an experimental mating of quite unrelated dogs that happened to produce over sized animals. 20 years ago around Hudson WI, there were 6 or 8 enormous Golden Retrevers. The ethical breeder had made an experiments mating of two unrelated lines. All of the resultant litter were two inches taller than standard. They were sold as "pet quality" in the town. They all lived happy healthy lives hunting ducks, running with their masters, and one(mine) as a blue ribbon winning 4H dog. There was nothing wrong except the size. If the breeder of the oversized Sheltie was ethical he would have offered refund or partial refund when the dog went oversized, unless of course the buyer was warned and bought a pet quality animal. In the case of Shelties (Wendy has a good pet quality one) there is a rumor that in England when the breed was being developed, some Collie was added to make the head look better. If that rumor is true, the right (or wrong) cross could unexpectedly produce a very oversized dog. I still hold that the chances of purchasing an 80 lb at maturity dog instead of the 20 lb expected is much reduced if the ancestors are known.
