Re: [RC] Jack Russels now: puppy selection LONG - Sisu West Ranch"...yes, as far as AKC registration means a dog is quality i agree with you that registration is a joke..." It is no different than any of the United States horse registries. A registered Arab, QH, etc. only means that the parentage is on record. In some breeds (Pinto for example) it only means that the color is right (like you couldn't look at the animal and see the color for yourself). At one time there was (and may still be for all I know) a grade horse registry. That registry meant that it was a horse and you were stupid enough to send them money. I am not depreciating registries. On the contrary, being able to trace ancestry provides one important criteria for animal selection. You just can't blindly assume that a registered animal is a good animal. The same thing holds for unregistered animals. I had a friend who wanted a small dog. They went to the animal shelter and got a cute puppy. Unfortunately, HJ Heinz grew to be 80 lbs, and had multiple health problems due to his ancestry. The most distressing one was that his rear end was a size more suitable for a 20 lb dog than an 80 lb one. At least if they had purchased a purebred small dog, they would have obtained a small dog.
