Re: [RC] What do you prefer for rain gear during a ride? - Truman Prevatt

I don't do rain. But when I get caught and have thought to take it I have a Gortex jacket I put on. As far as my legs, riding tights don't absorb water so I don't really worry about my legs. And if it is too cold and raining that I have to worry about them ( maybe <40 degrees), I am in the bar.

I don't put on a garbage bag and ski in the rain and I don't ride in a cold rain.

One of the big draw backs to any rain gear (even GroeTex) is you will probably get wetter from sweating than you get from the rain. So many times - especially in the SE, I ride in and change shirts at the stop. If it's cool, I'll ride in a polar fleese vest and change shirts at the stop. I did one 100 - cold rain off and on all day, in a polypropylene longsheeve shirt covered by a thin wool shirt and a polar fleese vets. If I got hot I open up the vest and then the shirt.

I was soaked but warm and comfortable - which is what is important.

Once again, I am asking for the benefit of your collective years of
experience...

I've been drooling over one of those lovely full-length oilskin dusters, but
before I make the purchase I would like to know whether it will be comfortable
on a ride. If not, I can think of other wishlist items I could spend that
money on!!

I like the full-length oilskin idea because it would protect my saddle AND me. ;) (Plus it will breathe better than a PVC rain suit.) Our last ride in '03
was a torrential downpour and it pained me to see my new saddle get drenched. But if it will be too hot, or if it won't be truly waterproof, then I will
ditch the idea!

So....:

Does anyone use an oilskin coat during a rainy ride? If so, within what range
of temperatures is it comfortable, and did you find it to be truly waterPROOF? If you don't use one, what type of rain gear do you prefer?

Thanks!!
