Re: [RC] Fitness - Rae CallawayI, also, work full time - commute an hour+ twice a day to downtown Houston. I have 15 horses, not all mine, at my place that must be taken care of and this is on 1 acre for the barn & pens, so there is quite a bit of stall cleaning involved, plus, all the nitpicks in care that boarders require. I mostly ride on weekends. Every Saturday, I trailer up to Sam Houston to get miles in in the forest (12 - 18, usually). On Sunday, I have an arena lesson with a show trainer to make sure we keep our basic skills sharp. Occasionally, I manage to get a ride or two in during the week, usually short and fast (5-8 miles in an hour before dark). My mare, Scarlet, has gotten very fit on this schedule and she consistently, without "racing," does pretty fast LD's. I got her son, now 5, ready for LD's using the same schedule. (He's now with a friend who has next door access to the longer trails and a MUCH shorter commute from her job, so he's getting extra conditioning and is now doing 50's) LD's are not all that hard on a horse. I wouldn't take a horse out of the pasture, who hasn't done anything for years, out on an LD, but one with regular riding, even arena riding - yes, most can do a good 4 - 5 hour LD with no problems.Rae Tall C Arabians - Central ----- Original Message ----- From: <rene.acker@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, December 14, 2004 8:34 AM Subject: [RC] Fitness I am not an endurance rider (yet).
