RE: [RC] solar heaters - Bob Morris

OK Dot:

A water heater generally takes about 1500 watts of
electricity to run. Now that is a fair amount when compares
to a fence charger. The formula is volts times amps equals
watts. So to work the formula backwards, if you are using
1500 watts and 120 volts of electricity, then you need about
12.5 amps. Well, with out substantial battery backup you
would be hard put to assemble, at an economical cost, the
solar panels to do the job.

Using ground heat is a much more feasible way of deterring
frozen water tanks.

I'm giving this question one more try. I can;t believe
there isn't some
one on ride camp that knows something about this. (I'd
settle for "It can't
be done")
Or somewhere else to look for information.

Thanks

Dot

We have small solar panels that charge a lot of electric
fence. I have a
small solar panel and marine battery in my pickup camper
that runs lights,
radio, fan, water pump, etc. Not very expensive. Is
there such a thing
as
a solar powered heater for a stock water tank? There are
converters from
AC to DC and DC to AC, what would be needed to run a
regular small tank
heater from solar?
I know there engineers out there, plus lots of practical
experience. Give
me some ideas. I'm tired of chopping ice for the pasture
horses. (No
power
out there.)

Thanks much
