Re: [RC] [RC] The Sultan's Slave Trade - Maryanne Stroud GabbaniI do hate to be a Cassandra, but darlings where has the news media been for the past umpteen years? And why is this story so important right now?Probably everyone BUT the United States has been aware of this situation for a long time but has chosen to keep their eyes shut. Why ever do you think that the UAE is so popular with many other Arab states. I'm sorry but this sort of thing is not condoned by Islam, it's condoned by people who are more interested in oil and money than ethics. If you check on the net you will find plenty of stories about this....and other lovely habits, like coming to villages here and finding very young girls to marry who can't read to understand the contract and find out later that it's just summer employment. Please don't let this turn into another round of us versus them; the civilsed world versus the barbarians. PLEASE don't try to tell me that the US State Department hasn't known about this all along and been invited to the races and never said a word. That is utter rubbish. EVERYONE has known about this horrible practice for ages. This is a crime, undoubtedly, as there are many such crimes in this world. Maybe this one can be stopped. Maybe even a couple more can be stopped. But do open your eyes, seek information....it is out there. And don't let this degenerate into Arab/Muslim bashing. The people who "sell" their kids are also Muslims who are so desperately poor that when they are told that the child will be taught a trade and well cared for they are desperate to believe it. They probably think that they are giving their kid a chance to get rich being a jockey. No one can accuse be of being a staunch defender of Emirati ethics, but I can see the same kind of blindness in people who sold horses and wanted to believe the stories that they would be retired to lovely green pastures in a desert country the size of Manhattan. There are good people and bad people of every flavour in this world. Use your noodles, guys. That is incredible hypocrisy and, even the naiive amongst us, should be able to see this needs to be fixed. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
