Re: [RC] Gaiter - Candace Kahn

Hi Barbara and Bob,
As you probably know, I have always recommended gaiters.  They really do help debris from getting between the heel bulb and boot and causing problems.
The gaiters are available in 3 different sizes.  The size you order depends on how the boot fits your horse's hoof.  There are two thicknesses - 3mm (regular size) and 7mm (large size and extra large sizes).
Let's say your horse's hoof measures 4 1/4 wide by 4 5/8 and you have a size 1 Boa Boot.  Since the hoof measurement is at the bottom of the size chart, I would recommend using the thicker gaiter [7mm - size Large] to take up any extra room.  This would hold true for any size boot relative to the hoof measurement.  If your horse's pasterns are 10.5 inches or larger I would recommend using the X-large size, but you still need to be concerned with where the hoof measurements fall within the size chart.  If your hoof size is at the upper end of the chart I would recommend using the thinner gaiter [3mm or size regular].

With Warm Regards,

We bought a pair of Boa Boots at the convention in February.  We have not used them with the gaiters yet, but it must be essential to do so, as we experienced the following problem:  Young horse in training in sandy arena.....Boa Boot on one hind foot, protecting a hoof that had had an abscess cut out of it......sand shortly got into the boot, packed in around the pastern, and caused the horse to  go lame.  We removed the boot, brushed off the sand, rode the horse without the boot, and everything was fine.  Moral:  I'm sure gaiters will be necessary.

Hi Bob,
Depending on the size of your horse's hoof and the size boot you ordered will determine what thickness gaiter you need to order.  If you would like to send me your horse's hoof measurements and the size boot you have I will be happy to recommend the size gaiter you should order.
I always recommend using gaiters with Boa Boots.  While not every horse is sensitive and need them to prevent chafing the gaiters also prevent debris from getting between the heel bulb and boot.  And the new design is great - they now stay in place.
