Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] horse ivermectin for dogs?OT - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

We also do most of our canine vet work, not to save money, but because the options really are not great. Egyptian vets are not trained working on live animals (don't ask me why) and most of their training is for cattle, rabbits and chickens, so we have to work on training them for horses, cats and dogs. It's often better to do it myself. My most treasured possessions are a Merck Veterinary Manual and a massive 15 lb tome on avian veterinary treatment. These books are stained, annotated, and right where I can reach them any time of the day.

My bathroom scares visitors because it has a big plastic box full of syringes of all sorts of sizes and gauges. No junkie here, but you know what kind of measurements you have to make for bird medications?? If you are going to do it yourself, have a calculator ready, do your research thoroughly on the meds and the species and the breed. Your animals can't afford for you to make a stupid mistake.

Thanks, I don't suppose ther is a conversion for the 1.87% paste?

Yes.... crank out the screw on the plunger and put a quarter for every 25 lbs. of dog weight. (For a 50 lb dog, put 2 quarters) Then screw the measureing device back in, and pull the quarters out. That measures it for you. I always squirt it out on my finger, not into the dogs mouth, incase it isn't secure and squirts the whole thing.

Everyone is right that you should know your dog/breed and the specific intolerances with them. For example... don't use Acepromazine (sp?) on an Airedale, and don't give a Norwich Terrier the vacine for Leptorsporosis. ( I just know the terriers because of being a terrier handler)

Something I learned from an old handler a long time ago was to use Bio-Sol (sold at feed stores as a cattle drench) for a dog with "a bug". This could mean anything from one that went out and ate something dead in the pasture or one that picked up a bug at a bench show from people touching several dogs and passing it around. But it is a dog that is either throwing up or has diahrea, and isn't seriously ill. Usually the dogs will pass it from one to the next. Anyway... one capfull for a 50lb dog does the trick, usually over it by morning. I don't use this to avoid vet bills, but because it works better for me than anything the vet has ever given me, and I'm usually on the road when the dogs "pick up" something like this.
