Re: [RC] The Numbers Are Running Against Us - Chris Paussome of us are trying, but it gets discouraging when peole can put mediocre paints and QHs on the Internet classifieds and sell a horse in a day or a week, and it takes me 6 months or a year or longer to find a good home for a well-built Arab baby. That's one reason I'm raising them in ones and twos, because it takes so long to market them. So I'm not helping out Arab numbers a whole lot! and I just can't afford to keep a big herd nor do I have the time to mess with more than that. I like to have babies halter broke, trailer loading, groomable, etc., before they go to their new homes. The other thing is Assoc expenses. I can register our Anglo babies for $35 before the age of 6 months. It is $100 to register a purebred. What's even worse, is that I've had requests for shipping semen from my stallion. That would help Arab numbers and keep some quality old bloodlines in the gene pool. But it's another $350 for a shipping license for shipped or frozen semen per stallion. Do other breed associations charge stallion owners for that? You'd think they'd try to make it easier and most cost effective for us to keep propagating Arabians if they are concerned about the numbers slipping! chris --- Truman Prevatt <tprevatt@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote: A new market has to be developed and the only new market I see for Arabs is the pleasure market. One of the jobs of a breed association is to build markets. The AHR seems to either be doing a very poor job at that or not doing it at all. TB's were not mentioned. We Arabian horse owners are now verymuch"little fellows" and destined to stay that way unless we wake up and buck up. For example AHMsays51% of purebred Arabians "are 16 years and older". Not the best ages for breeding. Last year 8,000+ Arabians registered while 60,000+ paintsregisteredand the QH folk produced "160,000 new foals last year." Arabian production is outgunned 20 to 1 vs QH's. We should breed and promote a few more good horses and not sit on our hands while the herd simply ages out into residual fond memories. dnm=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
