RE: [RC] Garmin Forerunner ?s - Ridecamp GuestPlease Reply to: April ridecamp_mail@xxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================== You're lucky that your speeds are what they are. My boys won't walk 4 MPH. Mostly around 3 MPH. My 14.1 Tanna does a slow easy trot at around 5.2, while my 15 hand Serts does a slow easy trot at 6 mph. Neither likes to trot at 10 or 12 mph (except in competition). To get that fast in training, we canter. The Forerunner will serve you well, I believe. One thing I really like about it, and so I will use it every time I ride, is that it automatically keeps my training logs for me (Distance, time of day, time "running," average speed). It will hold history for something like 3 years, so I have plenty of time to copy data from the Forerunner to my spreadsheet on my computer. Rumor has it (from their website) Garmin will release a program that will download the data from the Forerunner to my computer. Once that happens, I wonder if I'll use my spreadsheet anymore at all. Depends on how good the program is. I'm glad you got it working. It is a nice little gadget. I'm planning to do more tests on its accuracy in woods, but so far, on the open road, it does a good job of keeping satellites and keeping accurate. It seems to lose about 1/4 mile for the first 10 miles (I have yet to use it on a longer training ride since I've only had it a week!). In other words, it says I've gone 9.75 miles when I've really gone 10. But that's an acceptable (to me) discrepancy. And about in line with some of my other Garmin units. (Although my Garmin V has always been the most accurate.) For other people that asked about how it compares to the Timex. I decided to wait for the Forerunner for 2 reasons. 1) It is only one piece. 2) I can store 100 waypoints or locations on the Forerunner. This means I can mark camp, or where I parked my truck, or where the vet check was so I can get back to any of those places. (As an aside, yes, the Timex transceiver is made by Garmin.) I am a "if it don't work out of the box what the hell" kind of person, so I had to be patient. It was worth it. I finally got the GPS to track satellites. The so-so news is, my guy's walk is 4 mph (I thought it was 5). The good news is his "trail" trot (that I mostly feel pretty comfortable with) is 10 mph. His FAST trot (that I can only do for a very short time) is 12 mph. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
