Unless, of course, you are dealing with a horse of unknown history (or of a known history of no deworming), which might have encysted small strongyles due to the gut already having a large population of adults. If that's the case, deworming with ivermectin will kill the adults and mobilize the younger stages to move into the gut, so that in a few weeks you have a nice equine egg shedding machine... If that's the case, a purge deworming is still in order, even if it isn't winter.
