The guy that played Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) was said
to go out riding on their one day off while filming even though he often rode
every working day. And he is playing the dude in Hidalgo I think.
Yes, I am astounded at the things they pulled off with the horses in Lord
of the Rings! The armor and weapons were all foam, which is a good
idea. I can't believe the things Gandalf's horse did! Some of the
riders/actors including Aragorn and Arwen's double (on that fancy white
andalusian stallion, movie 1) bought their horses! What and epic
film!
