The Panacur Purge has the
advantage of killing younger worms. There are encysted small strongyles
that are too young to be killed by Quest. Some people like the Panacur
Purge also, because it is gentler than
Quest.
As a footnote, a
manufacturers rep reported to me that 1.5x for three days has almost 90%
efficacy as 2x for five days, at obvious cost and labor
savings.

PS. The only advantage of Quest or
the Purge is to kill the encysted small strongyle. This is a problem thru
the winter months, as the cysts reduce the absorption of food. The life
cycle of the small strongyle is timed with the season, so that the larvae wait
in cysts in the wall of the gut (I think small intestine) for spring, when they
are released en masse to pollute your pasture. Killing them
in the winter with either Quest or Panacur, not only helps the animal now, but
is sanitation for next season. Thus there is really no point in using
either method at other times of year, as ivermectin is otherwise a broader
spectrum wormer.
