RE: [RC] [RC] Weather Change Colic - Howard Bramhall

I'm really curious about the heart rate of these three horses. Isn't it rare to have normal heart rates when there are no gut sounds, the horse is experiencing colic, and has refluxed? What about body temperatures? Were they normal also?

I do remember Dance Line's heart rate was up there (70's) and so was his body temperature. He was experiencing ileaus, which is a life-threatening halt in bowel motility. Everything I've read about ileus since that event leads me to believe it's stress related, hence, an endurance ride in itself can contribute to it's occurence (please, don't jump on me for that one, it's my own personal belief because of this experience).

This is one of the reasons why it's so important to realize not every horse is endurance material, no matter how well they peform during training rides. Some horses stress themselves out in a Ridecamp environment (as do some humans) and Dance Line is one of them. It's been 5 years since that event and Dance Line has not ever had one colic or ileus episode, even after going through two (going on three) hurricanes this year and many storms prior. Add to that living with me for over 9 years and, well, you might see why I think his situation was endurance related.

Even though Dance has a normal high heart rate when standing (52 to 56), his high heart rate stayed up there for quite awhile that night. I'm not sure if having his stomach pumped empty kept it up there, along with the body temp or not.

I guess Dance Line's situation was not identical to what happened with these three horses as much as I originally thought. Still, that reflux thing has got to be quite an abnomally. We may not ever find the exact cause of all of this, but, when it comes to ileus, my guess is the first thing to look at is stress.

cya,
Howard

>>although like Angie, if there is very much reflux, I'd also be curious
to know if the horses are on daily dewormer, and if the attending vets
felt that the reflux was due to anterior enteritis or to impaction.>>

Neither: heart rates were normal (40) on all three horses, no increased
white blood cell level (they ruled out enteritis), and they did not
suspect or detect (ultrasound, palpation) impaction. The attending vet
at the clinic labeled it 'excersize induced ileus'.

I don't know about the others, buy my mare was not on daily wormer.
