Re: [RC] [RC] colic/different food at rides - AprilI am no vet. I am not an experienced endurance rider (having only 4 50s to my name). That disclaimer aside, I will say that I don't think it is OK to let them eat whatever they want at a ride. I have read a lot of the archives. I have read tons of posts by Susan G. She rarely says it's ok to let a horse eat stuff at a ride (as in the day before, day of and day after) that they don't eat at home. SOME is fine as long as it's not too much, but, by and large, a horse should be eating at a ride what they eat at home. If you don't feed beet pulp at home, a ride camp is not the place to start. My horses get a flake or two of hay in the summer so when I take Tanna on a ride, his gut is used to hay and I just increase it a week before the ride. That's one thing that I have had drilled into me from reading years of Ridecamp. Don't try something at a ride that you don't use at home. Whether it's feed, tack, or clothing.
