Re: [RC] [RC] Eating dirt - AprilUsually the only time I see my 2 eating dirt is when they are out of salt. And usually, the only place I see them eat dirt is right where the salt pan is and they've moved it out of the way to get to the salty earth underneath. My pan has holes to allow water to run through and presumably the dirt underneath is salty, though I've never personally tested this hypothesis. It reminds me to put out more loose salt. They get vitamins and minerals in measured scoops in their feed each day. There are places on trail that he will come to a screaming halt just to eat the dirt. I have asked several vets about it and they have all said they don't know why some horses do that but not to worry about it. It may or may not be a mineral deficiency. My recollection is that several studies have been done to see if horses "know" when they are deficient in minerals and specifically eat those minerals. The results do not show that they do. If someone has scientific evidence to the contrary. I'd like to know. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
