Re: [RC] Electronic Communication on Trail? - Kristen A Fisher
Of the many forms of communication I have tried
on the trail with my horse, I haven't tried calling her cell phone LOL Just
kidding! Obviously you meant communications between the rider and those in camp
or elsewhere. So this is the
rule:
6k. Not having been paced or prompted by an
un-entered, withdrawn, or otherwise unauthorized equine, vehicle, or a person
other than another entrant. This does not preclude the ordinary support
services of attendants or pit crews. A crew may accompany their rider down
a public road in a support vehicle (unless there is a ride
management prohibition against it) provided they do not push or haze the
equine.
If Maggie has seen this happen, then I guess it's
not that clear of a rule. It appears to have been written to address a physical
pacing/prompting. If you try to extend it to verbal pacing by a member of your
crew, it's a stretch. And it only addresses non-entrants. What if someone as a
25 miler started radioing to a 50 miler friend from camp saying "step on it, if
you get here in 15 mins you will top ten"?

As for
using radio or telephone communications between
horse and rider during a competition; this has been
extensively discussed in the past and the general consensus was that
the AERC Rule 6. (k) covers the prohibition of such acts.

I saw riders using GPS and walkie talkies to communicate with
their crew on the S2S (and my story is coming, I promise, I just haven't had
the time to get to it) and have also seen riders using cell phones. I
don't see how they could have a rule against it. I hope not...I want
that GPS/walkie-talkie thingie!!!!
