Re: [RC] Drugs/Allergies/Rules - Sisu West Ranch"....that maybe this horse isn't suited to compete because he has an allergy to flies???So he should live out his days doing what?Pasture pet??...." There are many horse sports, and activities that do not protect their participants with rule 13. Heidi's point was that he may be more suitable for another career. I personally used to own two horses that are now doing other things. Al, who has about 250 endurance miles and perhaps 500 CTR miles now takes a flyfisherperson into the Wind River range. He had almost all the requirements for a great, fast endurance horse, but his LF leg could not handle the strain of training/competing. Maverick, who has abour 80 miles of CTR, couldn't handle endurance mentally. There were just too many scary things on the trail. He is now very happy as a lesson horse in a hunter-jumper stable. Sometimes it is best to cut our losses early, and find a different job for a horse. Not every horse is right for every activity. On the other hand, it is possible that aggressive desensitization for a few years may allow him to compete without problems with rule 13. By the way, not all persons or animals react the same way to antihistimines. I have taken loads of antihistimines for years with no side effects. Wendy, on the other hand, takes one and goes to sleep every time. I would not say that it would be cruel to ask a horse to compete under their influence, just against rule 13. I firmly support rule 13. The camel's nose is already to far under the tent flap.
