[RC] Rump ropes/.loading - rides2farI'm glad to see I'm not the only person left who loves a rump rope. The number one mistake I see people make when using a rump rope is pulling on the horse's head at the same time. When you try to pull a horse forward, he pulls back. I have a rope to the horse's halter, run through the loop at the front and back to a person, but that is only to point his head forward. I never allow any pressure on that rope and if he runs backwards I go with him. I tie a long soft rope to the tie ring on the side of my trailer, take it between the door & the trailer (by the hinges) so it's not pulling the door towards him, then go around the horse's butt, then up around the divider bar and back to my hand. The second mistake people make is never giving the horse any relief from pressure. I tighten the rope little by little but when he goes forward I do not tighten it back up right away. I want him to get the reward of no pressure. Then I ask him to go forward and slowly tighten the rope up some more. I had always pictured a rump rope being a disaster of freaked out horse & rope burns but when I tried it it just worked. The horse understands moving away from pressure and the trailer is a place to get away from it, not a place he's being dragged into. As to the getting out thing. Right now I'm training my new horse, Weedy to back out. He was trailer broke in a stock trailer and thinks he has to turn around. I'm not letting him get all the way in the 2 horse for fear he'll be permanently stuck. I'm letting him step in to get a bite of food but then he has to get back out. Hopefully next time he's all the way in it will occur to him to back up instead of attempt to freak and spin. :-P Angie, Ridin' Rock with Weedy on deck, and Kaboot bossing them all around the field. Not the quarry but the chase. Not the trophy but the race. ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand!
