Re: [RC] [RC]Horse Buying/Selling - Barbara McCrary

That paragraph stood out like a sore thumb! Lud had a horse that he rode
endurance for over ten years, a horse that set some sort of record for being
first and BC on all five days of a multi-day ride. As he got older, for
some reason he became less willing to drink on the trail and consequently he
had thumps a few times. We started to give him electrolytes and thought
that would solve the problem. It did for a brief time. Then came the day
when I mistakenly gave him e-lytes when he shouldn't have had them, and he
both thumped and colicked. I'm no longer as enthused about e-lytes as I
used to be. Lud finally decided this horse, after 12-13 years of successful
endurance , was no longer suited for the stressful work, and he sold him to
a woman for pleasure. He is now happily pampered, cared for, and loved, and
at 19 is still going strong.....in another venue. This horse's life was
saved by being given another job....a far less stressful one.

I do think that AERC and ride vets are doing an admirable job of juggling
these problems and providing good treatment. And in many cases, ride vets
are actively counseling riders whose horses suffer multiple metabolic
episodes to find the horse a different job. And the continued data
collection and studying of the data is an important part of that.
