The Eastern Red Wolf is not quite extinct, but close. There is a reintroduction program. The problem is it inbreeds with the coyote quite readly - thus forming a hybrid animal. This red wolf/coyote cross seems to be over taking the red wolf. It is much more adaptable to live in areas of human population than the red wolf. This cross breeding and mixing of the gene pool my be what ends up driving the red wolf into extinction.
