The article says that the "horse
processing" plants has shrunk from a dozen or so, down to just two in Texas and
that these two are facing the threat of closure.
They go on to say that now horses that have
health issues are standing in pastures instead of being sent to slaughter.
It says that the horse was used for food, and that was a benefit.
But then they also talk about the overall
effect this has on the price of horses now that there isn't a "bottom line"
price.
They also mention that when the BLM is
rounding up and selling horses for less than $200 and that they are destoying
the lower end of the horse market.
Quote " With the low end of the market eliminated,
we've ended up seeing a domino effect on all but the specialized categories such
as cutters, reiners and running horses. And even in these markets, only
the top bloodlines command respectable prices."
Has anyone read this months Western Horseman.. the column
Personally Speaking (pg 20)? It addresses the older horse and
slaughter house issue, and the effect it has on current horse
prices. Any opinions on this?
Could
you summarize the article? I don't subscribe to western
