As for always giving a tranquilizer, we don't feel it's necessary all of the time in the hospital where I work...it really depends on the situation and the specific medical reasons we're euthanizing the animal. If it's an animal in renal or kidney failure and good luck finding any sort of blood pressure in the veins, we'll give them a tranq, then place an IV catheter. Otherwise, there's plenty of ways to keep the pet relaxed and let them be aware of their owner's presence while it's being done. As with any medical situation...it depends!
