[RC] State Recreational Land Use Liability Laws - Linda B. Merims
A few weeks ago, the question came up about how
to approach a landowner to gain their permission
to ride your horse over their land.
Somewhere along the way I commented that many
states had passed laws that limit the liability
of landowners who permit free recreational use
of their land. Other states have not, and--I
was arguing as a mental exercise--in those cases
it might be better for the landowner if you,
in fact, never ask permission and stay a
trespasser.
Anyway, this web site has each state's recreational
land use liability laws:
http://www.americanwhitewater.org/access/liability.htm
When you approach a landowner, it always helps
if you can show them the applicable law.
