Re: [RC] Deaths - the list - Barbara McCrary

Well, that's interesting! I guess that makes legal sense....no one can
FORCE a rider to have an autopsy done on his horse. And since it's
unenforceable, a rider is likely to choose the less expensive way to go.
After all, the loss of a horse is expensive enough.

I agree that an autopsy of every horse that dies on an endurance ride

be a great thing, but many riders would choose not to pay for it. Any
solutions offered? Let's see....how about AERC making it mandatory that
the
rider pay for an autopsy and for disposal of the horse's body and each
ride
manager involved in such an incident refunding the entry fee to the
rider as
partial compensation.

That's an interesting proposal. I asked that question to a member of
the Vet Committee. The answer was:

"Not just your opinion...a lot of folks feel that way but the point is
the law says you cannot force that nor even treatment. You can tell a
rider you can't come to my ride anymore because you wouldn't treat your
horse but you can't make them let their horse be treated or make them
allow a necropsy.

What I am trying to point out to you is that all these things that
should or could be done have been discussed over and over in the past.
This happens every year, someone comes up with a great new idea except
it isn't new at all and those who have been around for all the prior
discussions about it tend to brush it off (not saying that is the right
attitude)"

Seems to be this stuff could be included in the Liability Release. You
don't agree, you don't get to ride.

Sure would like some more opinions here.
