Re: Re: [RC] Deaths - the list - Barbara McCrary

Many years ago, a horse dropped dead on the Castle Rock trail, less than 25
miles into the race and coming down a hill at a walk. The rider pulled the
tack and walked out. We went up, fetched the horse off the mountainous
trail and had a vet do an autopsy at our expense. The horse had died of a
ruptured artery in his lungs, quite possibly from earlier parasite damage.
No one could blame that rider for "killing his horse" from over-riding.
Witnesses said he absolutely was not riding too fast or hard.
I agree that an autopsy of every horse that dies on an endurance ride would
be a great thing, but many riders would choose not to pay for it. Any
solutions offered? Let's see....how about AERC making it mandatory that the
rider pay for an autopsy and for disposal of the horse's body and each ride
manager involved in such an incident refunding the entry fee to the rider as
partial compensation.

my husband and i sold a mare a few years ago, she just recently had
surgery after strong treatment for colic did not stop her symptoms -- a
fast trip to Alamo Pintado, exploratory surgery found a 5 lb fatty tumor
that had twisted the gut. no way to know about this. this mare has done
some limited distance rides, suppose she had this happen at a ride and
died as a result? many would be thinking that there was mis-management
on
the part of the rider, unprepared, whatever........there may be other
horses that have died at rides as a result of pre-existing conditions
where no one had a clue.

what about adding an autopsy to these deaths to rule out this type of
situation?
