[RC] Comparing Farrier methods - Lysane CreeOver the weekend I had a different farrier trim my horse's feet. I have used both farriers in the past, but it is the first time that I have two different farriers from one time to the next and so I really noticed the differences in their trimming methods. I think the major difference between the two is that the first one really cleans up the foot and cuts some of the sole. So when I look at the foot after a trim it looks very clean and "new". I wasn't present when the second farrier trimmed my horse this past week, but when I looked at her hooves later in the day, it seems that he just trimmed the extra length on the toe and the bars, rasped the foot a little and rolled the front toes. The "old sole" is still all there, I don't think he touched it all. Is this a "barefoot" type of trim? And I'm not referring to any particular method here, just a general "trim" for a horse that is not wearing shoes. My personal preference I think is leaning towards the second farrier, I don't really like seeing lots of sole being cut off. I would like to leave it as thick as possible. My filly is not being ridden right now and she is on 24 hour turnout in the summer and about 8-10 hour turnout in the winter. When I do start riding her I would like to leave her barefoot and only use Easyboots when I need to.
