Re: [RC] kicking filly - TypefI had the same similar situation with an 11-year-old rescued mare. Wild eyed and horrible with her feet and scratches really bad. We couldn't get near her without putting her up against a stall wall and using two people to doctor her. So I decided to try the reward system. Every time she'd let me touch her shoulder, I'd give her praise and give her a very tiny nibble of grain. It only took me two days before I'd progress my way down to being able to hold her foot to put the medicine with her being total ok with it. Before that, I called it the Medicine Dance. Each foot was a dance 4 times, once to pick the scabs, once to wash, once to dry and one to put the medicine on. Whenever we have a reaccurance of any kind of feaer factor in picking up her feet (which is seldom) I go back to the reward and all is well. ----- Original Message ----- From: "A. She has had very little done with her, and she does not like having her back feet handled. She has some sort of skin-scunge on 3 of her 4 feet at the top and front of her coronet band (scratches?) which is tender, and she kicks back when I apply medicated gel to the area. I don't think she's doing it out of meaness (she does not aim at me, just kicks back), I think she just doesn't know any better. In general she is very friendly, comes when she's called, and is very calm. Not to revive the 'whack-em' debate, but I'd be interested to hear suggestions on how to deal with the kicking.
