But I'm also making the point that I also agree with AERC by-laws that define an endurance ride as 50 miles or greater. While it is not sensible to ride an unconditioned horse in a 25 mile LD ride, I'm just saying I could be done. I believe an endurance ride should require a level of preparation and the commitment of a lot of time to do that preparation. ... Exactly. Sorry to belabor the point, but I'll make the comparison again to Marathons. A Marathon is 26 miles and 385 yards long, a distance established by tradition, but one that has become a major event in human running in part because it is long enough to be a special test, without being so long as to be undoable by all except the very elite. There are other distances, such as 10Ks (about six miles), that are more popular than Marathons -- and very challenging in their own right, for some people. My first wife had a bad heart and could not even run 100 yards. But no one seriously suggests making Marathons shorter and still calling them Marathons, or calling people who finish a 10K "Marathon runners." And just as a 10K is not a Marathon (even though both are long-distance foot races), an LD ride is not an endurance ride. Challenging for some people, and some horses, yes -- but not an endurance ride. -- Joe Long jlong@xxxxxxxx http://www.rnbw.com =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
