Re: [RC] [RC] Adios Research - Heidi SmithMinor point. But it's documented too that horses won't drink as much COLD water as they will warm (when the weather turns cold). We have a 'deicer ' in our trough as we had 2 older horses and heard many older horses don't drink enough water when it is cold leading to more colics ect. When I 'forget" to turn the deicer off or for some reason didn't have it in, the water consumption I noticed in my small herd ,drops by about a 1/3. Laurie Actually, that's a very valid point. One of the little "tips" that we learn early on riding the early spring and late fall rides here in the "frozen nawth" is to put our water in dark buckets (absorb that radiant heat!) and figure out the night before where the morning sun will hit so that we can leave the buckets with the ice on top out where they will be the warmest when we get into camp. (And if all else fails, HEAT some and add it!) Had ice on our water buckets at Old Selam this past weekend and we were parked in a fairly shady area--so really made sure that our boys tanked up over in the PR area where the tank was out in the open and had had an opportunity to get some of the chill off.
