SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE BLACKSBURG
VA 1208 PM EDT TUE SEP 16 2003
...HURRICANE ISABEL LIKELY TO AFFECT
THE AREA BY THURSDAY NIGHT...
HURRICANE ISABEL IS STILL EXPECTED TO
TRACK NORTHWEST INTO SOUTHEAST VIRGINIA BY THURSDAY EVENING...AND EAST OF
THE BLUE RIDGE THURSDAY NIGHT. THIS TRACK COULD BRING TROPICAL STORM FORCE
WINDS OF GREATER THAN 35 MPH TO LOCATIONS ACROSS THE PIEDMONT...AND
FOOTHILL SECTIONS OF VIRGINIA...AS WELL AS PARTS OF NORTHWEST NORTH
CAROLINA. IN PARTICULAR...LOCATIONS ALONG A CORRIDOR FROM THE
DANVILLE VICINITY...TO THE LYNCHBURG AND LEXINGTON AREAS...WOULD BE
AFFECTED THE MOST. IN ADDITION...RAINFALL AMOUNTS OF GREATER THAN TWO
INCHES MAY OCCUR...WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE ALONG THE
EASTERN SLOPES OF THE BLUE RIDGE IN VIRGINIA...FROM THURSDAY NIGHT
THROUGH MIDDAY FRIDAY. SOME HEAVY RAIN AND GUSTY WINDS WOULD ALSO OCCUR
WEST OF THE BLUE RIDGE...ALTHOUGH AMOUNTS AND WIND SPEEDS SHOULD
BE LOWER.
WITH LANDFALL 2 OR MORE DAYS OUT...THERE IS STILL A LOT
OF UNCERTAINTY WITH THE TRACK OF ISABEL. JUST A SLIGHT CHANGE IN
THE TRACK TO THE WEST COULD BRING STRONG WINDS AND VERY HEAVY RAIN
TO ALL OF THE COUNTY WARNING AREA.
EMERGENCY MANAGERS AND OTHER
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS SERVICE AGENCIES NEED TO MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF
ISABEL OVER THE NEXT 24 TO 36 HOURS...BY WHICH TIME THE TRACK SHOULD BECOME
MORE CERTAIN.
