[RC] West Nile - Jonni JewellA woman living near Greeley, CO called in. She raises quarter horses and decided not to vaccinate for West Nile because she heard the stories about mares aborting from the vaccine. She ended up with 15 horses infected with West Nile and 3 died (her vet bills must have been out of sight).<<< I would put money on that she saw an article from The Denver Post in the spring. That was where the "Lost Foals" web page got a lot of attention. We all have choices to make with our horses care and well being. And all of us FEEL we are making the right choices. With the age of the internet, it has opened up a whole new world for the ability to have information right at our finger tips. But please, do your research on things you read, and do not take everything for fact just because it is in print. Negative or positive towards certain procedures, feeds, care, training....what ever.... You have an animal that is DEPENDING on you to make the right choice. Yes, we can all make wrong choices...that, unfortunately is part of life, as this poor woman in Colorado found out, by having sick, and even losing so many of her horses to the WNV. But do what you feel is necessary to make the right choices. That may just be talk to your vet, or as someone else suggested, to go to different web sites, and read the information offered. I still think very often, groups like this can give some of the best information, as we are the ones doing these procedures, using the feed, doing the training. We speak from first hand experience.
