Re: [RC] Riding in the heat and humidity - Glenda R. SnodgrassEndurance riders have been taught not to ride when the sum of the heat and humidity is over 150. That rule only works in other parts of the country. :) Down here (Mobile, Alabama, on the Gulf Coast) we'd hardly ever get to ride under those conditions! I have learned that the best way to ride in heat and humidity is to ride every day, in the hottest part of the day, through the spring. When I do that, my horse and I both acclimate quite well as the temp & humidity gradually increase. We can do a 25-mi training ride at noon in July, with a temp of 95 and humidity 80-90% (typical weather for June-July-August here), with no problems. But if an injury or something else happens in the spring so that we don't get our acclimation riding in, then summer riding is the pits. There are only a few endurance rides in the summer months in the SE region, and I've never actually done one myself, but I have done plenty of 25-mi training rides in the middle of summer. But many of our spring and fall rides have temps in the 80s and humidity in the 70s. A few examples: On April 19, at Ponce de Leon, the temp at 7:53am was 66 and the humidity was 100% for a total of 166. At 11:02 that same day, the temp was 79 and the humidity was 69%, for a total of 148. At Million Pines on April 5, the temp was 62 and humidity 82 at 8:02am, a total of 144. At the Synergist ride on May 3, the temp at 7:53 was 67 and humidity was 97%, for a total of 164. By noon it was 80 and 62 for 142. -- Glenda R. Snodgrass Before you begin, consider ...
